Question 1 Extended - Final Video Analysis

The film starts with the Sharrison Productions logo; this appears at the start of all of our films which gives the film a professional look to begin with.

The first character you see is Tom Benson, he appears first as he is the main character in the film. The first shot is him leaving his flat; we edited this to make the lighting slightly darker and bluer. We did this to make the shot look colder making the shot look dull to represent his life and to also represent that it is a cold morning. The corridor also looks quite dated to show that he doesn’t live in the nicest of places.

The next shot leads on to the stair scene, we have edited this to make it look like it’s through a CCTV camera, we have done this to show that he lives in a rough area as there are cameras to catch any trouble makers. This shot also fits in with the music as there is the line ‘Finally I can see you crystal clear’ which can be linked to it being seen through the CCTV camera.

This shot follows Tom Benson down the stairs of the block of flats. He has to do this as the lifts are broken, in this shot there are caution signs outside the lift door but they are wet floor signs which show how no one official is dealing with the problem and that no one really cares. The caution on the wet floor sign could also signify the danger in the area as it is quite a bad area to live.
This shot carries on for about 20 seconds going down the stairs and this is also sped up to 200% this shows how high up his flat is and what he has to go through every day to get to and leave his flat. At the end of this shot there is also a woman waiting for the lift (which is broken) and he walks straight past her. This shows there is little community spirit in the area and no one really talks to one another.

This is the first shot you see of Sam Carter, this shot of him leaving the lift comes after seeing Tom Benson going down 5 flights which shows the contrast in lifestyles the two characters have. Also the lift and what you can see outside of the lift looks quite clean and modern which is also a contrast between the two.

It then goes back to Tom walking past a graffitied wall, this shows again that he is in a rough area which is also proved as the council and other people haven’t tried to clean the walls as they know it will just happen again. The shot has been edited to look crackly which also shows that Tom is rough around the edges and not the finished article. Then the colour wipes across the screen, this represents the vibrance and youth that he brings to the film.

This is the first shot where you can see a characters face. This shot is taken from below Sam which shows that he is powerful. In the background you can see his large mansion which is lit by the sun in comparison to Toms rough housing, another contrast is Toms lighting which is cold and dull.

Again there is another shot of a rundown area this time an old factory. This shows that the neighbourhood was once a thriving community but has now become neglected and vandalised. There are also no people in any of the shots, this is because they are afraid of going out or don’t want to go out due to how unpleasant the neighbourhood is. Also with the factory being closed, it could mean that there are no jobs in the area meaning no money leading to it becoming run down.

This shot is of Sam outside of his mansion on the phone; again the lighting is bright and warm. We have edited this clip so that Sam appears twice; this represents his popularity as he has to deal with phone calls from plenty of people. Although he having to talk to loads of people on the phone all day, the way he is sitting also shows that he is relaxed and has no real worries about the life he has. There are also two healthy looking bushes either side of the stairs, this shows how wealthy he is and that he has people looking after the grounds for him, showing that he doesn’t really have to deal with too much himself.

After seeing the shot of Sam being relaxed outside his mansion there is then a quick shot of Tom rushing past, this again shows another contrast in lifestyles as Sam is not really bothered about much at all whereas Tom is focussed and determined to where he wants to get. There is again another warning sign, again signifying the danger of where he is. This also suggests that perhaps he shouldn’t be where he is. There are also some dead weeds along the fence, this compared to Sam’s mansion shows how different the places are. It also shows that it is even hard for plants to live there.
The next shot shows Tom trying to hurdle over a barrier. He catches his foot on the barrier and ends up on the floor. This shows what kind of person Tom is at the start of the film. This represents his current rapping career as he is struggling to get over the first hurdle however this changes by the end of the film.

This shot along the barrier shows Tom jumping over successfully although he is being more careful. There is the sound of the barrier rattling as he goes which represents that he still isn’t 100% about going over. There are also some rays of sun coming into the shot which shows that things are looking up for him and is a sign of success.

After making the jump the camera follows Tom down the path. After the rays of sunlight when he jumped the barrier for the first time in Tom’s shots the sky is blue, this reflects Tom’s mood after making the hurdle as he is relieved and slightly happy that he has made it.

This shot is from behind a fence represents Tom being trapped, like he is behind bars. It represents him being trapped where he lives and that he can’t get to where he wants to be. In this shot it is also edited to make Toms walk stutter with the music which also represents his career making a stuttering start and not being able to make it smoothly. Also when the walk begins the stutter the colours become brighter which links to his career which is what he really wants to be doing.

It then cuts to Sam in the studio doing what he does best. After seeing the rough area where Tom has been it then cuts to Sam in his white, clean and modern looking studio. The white studio represents good where all the good music is made and where everyone wants to be. In Tom’s eyes it is Heaven. Sam looks confident and looks like he is enjoying himself.

There are small clips of Calvin Banks mixing and adjusting sound levels in between Sam rapping. He keeps appearing in between as he is crucial in Sam’s career and holds it together. He is using high quality, expensive equipment which shows that Sam is in the big time and that they are making music for the big time.

We then have both characters walking along the same path side by side. This represents their career path although Tom hasn’t made it yet he will by the end of the film. The difference in colours represents Sam’s career being bright and promising whereas Toms is dull and with little life, however this will change as the film progresses. Also the 2 characters differ in how they head along the path, Tom keeps his head down showing he is focussed and is heading for exactly where he wants to go whereas Sam stops turns around and starts dancing and messing around, this represents Sam’s current flamboyant lifestyle and also shows that he has far less focus than Tom.

It then wipes to Tom walking on his own, this lets the audience know that he is going to be the main character for the film. It also represents that he has no one there for him and he is going to have to get there on his own. Also the green beginning to grow over the brown in the plants represents that his career may well be beginning and that this is the start of his new life.

The shot then pans up to the trees and the title ‘Rollin’ in the Deep’ fades in.  The shot pans up showing all the branches over time leaving him ‘in the Deep’ which he wants to get out of. The lighting is also quite dark which shows the dark things that Tom will have to overcome to reach is dream.

After the title there is a quick cut to a point of view shot. It shows someone looking at Sam’s mansion from a distance. Then they quietly say ‘Look at that’ and then the shot falls and blurs. This adds the mystery to the opening; someone was obviously watching Sam or his mansion and had to make a quick exit or hide. Obviously they weren’t meant to be there but who was it?

It then cuts after the camera blurs to the title again, was the person looking at the mansion ‘Rollin’ in the Deep’ or will they be after potentially being caught.
There is a cross bridge of sound with the sound of birds in the background and Sam walking into his mansion to begin the film. The sound of birds signifies it being peaceful.

YouTube Upload

We initially had some problems with uploading to YouTube when logged into our school accounts. It would get to 100% every time and then freeze.

Therefore we had to see the IT Technicians and then get them to Upload it.

We are now going to upload it onto Facebook and try to get as much feedback as possible to use for our evaluation.
